Wedding Costs by French Region: Paris vs the Provinces

The same wedding costs about a fifth more around Paris than in a rural region, and a June Saturday adds more again. Here are the figures from our budget simulator, region by region, and what really drives the gap.

Key takeaways

+21%for the same 50-guest wedding in Île-de-France compared with a rural region, in our simulator. Venue, caterer and vendors cost more; the dress and the rings don't.

  • For 50 guests at a classic level, in April, May or October, our simulator gives about €17,200 in a rural region and €20,800 in Île-de-France.
  • For 100 guests the same comparison gives about €22,000 against €27,000.
  • The gap comes from the venue, the caterer and local vendors; outfits, rings and hair and makeup cost about the same everywhere.
  • The season weighs as much as the region: a June Saturday in Île-de-France costs about 50% more than the same wedding in the provinces between November and March.

You will read that a Paris wedding costs two or three times as much as one in the provinces. It can, but only because the two weddings being compared are rarely the same: more guests, a grander venue, a higher level of service. For the same wedding, the gap is smaller, and more predictable.

The figures below come from Weddtap's budget simulator, calibrated on the orders of magnitude published by the wedding industry in France. They are estimates, not survey results: use them to compare, not as a price list.

Average wedding costs by region

Region50 guestsPer guest100 guestsPer guest
Rural region / small town€17,200€344€22,000€221
Large city (Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes...)€18,200€365€23,500€235
Provence / Côte d'Azur€19,300€386€25,000€250
Paris / Île-de-France€20,800€416€27,000€270

Classic level of service, April, May or October. Note that the cost per guest falls as the list grows: the venue, the photographer and the outfits cost the same for 50 or 100 people, and are simply shared across more guests.

Why Paris is expensive

  • Venue: the biggest gap. Demand is high, good dates are few, and the estates within easy reach of Paris know it. In our simulator a classic venue goes from about €3,500 in the provinces to €4,450 in Île-de-France.
  • Catering: wages, rents and transport push up the price per guest. At a classic level, about €70 per guest in the provinces becomes nearly €90 around Paris.
  • Vendors: photographers, DJs and florists price for their local market, and travel into the city costs them time.
  • What doesn't change: the dress, the suit, the rings and the hair and makeup are bought, not booked locally, so they cost about the same everywhere.

The season matters as much as the region

100 guests, classic levelNovember-MarchApril, May, OctoberJune-September
Rural region / small town€19,900€22,000€24,200
Paris / Île-de-France€24,200€27,000€29,800

A June Saturday in Île-de-France and a March Friday in a rural region are the two ends of the scale: about €10,000 apart for the same 100 guests. For a Paris couple, moving from July to October saves about €2,800 on 100 guests; moving the wedding to a rural region in the same summer season saves about €5,500.

Money-saving by region

  1. Paris and Île-de-FranceLook beyond the inner ring: estates an hour or so from Paris, reachable by train, are often cheaper and have more free dates. Ask about weekday and winter rates, which some Paris venues discount.
  2. Large citiesA venue on the edge of the city, or in the countryside thirty minutes out, is usually cheaper than a hall in the centre. Check how guests get back at night.
  3. Provence and the Côte d'AzurSummer is the most expensive season there. May, June and September often have fine weather at lower prices than July and August.
  4. Rural regionsYour money goes further: it can pay for a better caterer or a photographer for the whole day. Plan transport and accommodation, which are often the missing piece.

Where your guests live comes first

A cheaper region only saves money if your guests can get there easily. If most of them live in Paris, a wedding in Brittany lowers the venue and catering bill, but adds travel, a night or two in a hotel, and sometimes refusals. Count the cost for them too: a good wedding is one the people you love can attend.

The level of service is the third lever, and often the biggest. In our simulator, the same 50 guests in Île-de-France come to about €11,400 at a simple level, €20,800 at a classic level and over €41,000 at a prestige level. The region adds a fifth; the choices you make add or remove much more.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you do a Paris wedding for €15,000?
Yes, at a simple level: our simulator puts 50 guests in Île-de-France at about €11,400 with a simple caterer, a modest venue and no frills. At a classic level, even 30 guests come to about €18,300 in April, May or October.
Why are province weddings cheaper?
Mainly because of the venue and the caterer: rents, wages and demand are higher in and around Paris, and every vendor's price reflects it. Items bought rather than booked, like the dress or the rings, cost roughly the same everywhere.
Is it cheaper to get married outside Paris if all our guests live there?
Not always. Moving the wedding two hours away lowers the venue and catering bill, but adds transport, often accommodation, and sometimes a second night. Count the cost for your guests too before deciding.
Which month is the cheapest?
November to March. In our simulator, that season takes about 12% off the estimate, while June to September adds about 12%. A Friday or a Sunday can lower some venue and vendor prices further.
